gary-rhodes 5

We were shocked to hear the news today that Gary Rhodes has sadly passed away. Gary was just 59 years old and was in good health.

As a young chef in the early 90’s, I like so many was inspired by this breath of fresh air that came on  the scene and talked about British classics with such passion. Before long every upmarket restaurant had oxtails, faggots, bread and butter pudding on the menu.

What Gary did single handedly was to champion these classics and cleverly put his own twist on them, in the process making British food cool again. His cooking was refined and elegant and he took humble ingredients and elevated them to new heights.

A very successful TV career followed as well as numerous books, all of which are in my collection. his recipes have really stood the test of time and it’s testament to the brilliance of Gary that you can still see his influence on menus today all these years later.

You will be greatly missed and thank you for your amazing contribution to the industry.

How the living wage and minimum wage increases affects us all!

19 September 2019

Minimum Wage

The recent increases in the UK minimum and living wage are welcomed by many people and it’s obviously a key role of a caring society to protect those people who may struggle to afford housing and paying bills.

Whilst the minimum wage is a legal requirement, the living wage is optional for employers to pay their staff.

The increases will affect many businesses over the coming years and the catering industry may be affected more than most.

Whilst welcoming the increases, we must also be aware of maintaining the gap between the unskilled work force and experienced, professional chefs who are already in short supply.

To maintain this gap we  will be required to pay our chefs more and the as always, this cost will inevitably be passed on to the customer.

The days of families eating out on a regular basis may soon become a thing of the past as the additional costs begin to bite.

Brexit… It’s still very unclear!

27 May 2019

Brexit image 2

With the situation surrounding Brexit still far from clear, the picture remains uncertain. In light of the recent European elections, the two main parties took a huge hit with the newly formed Brexit party dominating. Adding to this, the Tories are about to start electing a new leader after the resignation of Teresa May. Hard line Brexiteers appear to be lining up to for the role and the prospect of leaving without a deal looms larger than ever before. There have been lots of studies about the potential impact a no deal Brexit would have on business and one thing we can all agree on is that it would have a hugely damaging effect for many years to come.

6 months to go!!

29 September 2018

Brexit image

We are now just 6 months from the date when the UK will officially leave the E.U but with so much seemingly undecided many people are still unsure what will happen. Everyone is hopeful that Theresa May will be able to strike a deal with Brussels but the likelihood of returning without one seems to be a real possibility.

Like so many sectors, the catering industry reliant upon stability within the economy and these are uncertain times. However, we’ve seen some sectors not only survive difficulties when the economy looks uncertain but actually grow.

This may well be the case with hospitality but as they say ‘watch this space’.

On your marks get set…GO!!

Tour De Yorkshire

The Tour de Yorkshire started today in the historic market town of Beverley and stage 1 see’s the cyclists head to Doncaster. As in previous years, thousands of people lined the route to cheer on local riders. It seems this event is gaining in popularity each year and if the start was anything to go by this year is shaping up to be the best so far.

A few years ago we were priviliged to be asked to provide chefs to look after the catering for some of the Tour de France teams when the event was held in the UK. Now that the Tour de Yorkshire is a regular feature on the cycling calendar, we are constantly reminded of that amazing summer!

Harrogate in the spotlight

3 March 2018

Harrogate has a enviable reputation of being a fashionable spa town, tourist destination and jewel of the Yorkshire Dales. It also hosts a wide array of watering holes and award winning places to eat. Most famous of  all being Betty’s Tea Room which is now a tourist destination in its own right! More recently the rise of the gasto pub has seen a revival in eating out with the young and not so young alike. You can now choose from menus with dishes from across the globe without the need to venture more than a mile. With so many well established eateries as well as new ventures to choose from, its little wonder then that Harrogate is now one of Yorkshire’s prime locations to dine.
